We use accounts of historical earthquakes to assign intensities and the intensity assignments for the 2010 Haiti earthquakes to derive an intensity attenuation relation for Hispaniola. The Puerto Rico trench exhibits great water depth, an extremely low gravity anomaly, and a tilted carbonate platform between (reconstructed) elevations of +1300 m and -4000 m. I argue that these features are manifestations of large vertical movements of a segment of the Puerto Rico trench, its forearc, and the island of Puerto Rico that took place 3.3 m.y. Notice, Smithsonian Terms of Over a few hundreds or thousands of years several meters of motion accumulate resulting inoccasionalearthquakes and associated landslides and tsunamis. The free-air anomaly is around +70 mgal along the Andes coast, and this is attributed to the subducting dense slab. Numerical simulation of the 1918 Puerto Rico tsunami showing calculated inundation of the Aguadilla coast in northwest Puerto Rico. Astrophysical Observatory. This gravity anomaly can reveal the presence of subsurface structures of unusual density. A crustal section across the Puerto Rico trench, J. geophys. This effect is very well understood and can be calculated precisely for a given time and location using astrophysical data and formulas, to yield the tidal correction gtid. An official website of the United States government. A lock ( Immediately after the 1946 earthquake, a tsunami struck northeastern Hispaniola and moved inland for several kilometers. Below are other science projects associated with this project. The Puerto Rico Trench is also associated with the most negative gravity anomaly on earth, -380 milliGal, which indicates the presence of an active downward force. However, the Earth has a rugged surface and non-uniform composition, which distorts its gravitational field. The rate at which these plates come together is similar to the rate at which a human fingernail grows. Sharing - Individual scientists are hereby granted permission, without fees or further requests to GSA, to use a single figure, a single table, and/or a brief paragraph of text in other subsequent works and to make unlimited photocopies of items in this journal for noncommercial use in classrooms to further education and science. The Puerto Rico trench (PRT), with water depths of up to 8340 m, is the deepest part of the Atlantic Ocean, yet the relative plate motion along the PRT is predominantly strike slip with only a small component of North America (NOAM) plate subduction (N70E [ Calais et al., 2002; Mann et al., 2002 ]). of Earth and Planetary Sciences, 1981. For example, a mass of dense ore below the surface will give a positive anomaly due to the increased gravitational attraction of the ore. Privacy Policy Joint analyses of the ocean bottom seismographs and land-based seismic data reveal that the swarms are locat, Historical records indicate frequent seismic activity along the north-east Caribbean plate boundary over the past 500 years, particularly on the island of Hispaniola. With the exception of the alkali basalts of Grenada, the volcanics of the arc can, The Puerto Rico Trench is assumed to be caused by a downwards bending of the Atlantic lithosphere. This is taken into account by the terrain correction gT. Official websites use .gov The Bouguer anomaly over continents is generally negative, especially over mountain ranges. The trench itself is very negative,[23] with values more negative than 250 mgal. Semantic Scholar is a free, AI-powered research tool for scientific literature, based at the Allen Institute for AI. Weather permitting scientists expect to execute 20 dives with NOAAs remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Deep Discoverer. ) or https:// means youve safely connected to the .gov website. The hazard from tsunamis is also apparent. This belt of positive anomalies is called the, Gravity models of oceanic trenches computed prior to the advent of plate tectonic concepts fell into two classes of solutions: (1) if a homogeneous mantle density was assumed, then the gravity models, The free air gravity anomaly and depth are sampled at 2-km intervals along two long, reasonably straight ship tracks across the Atlantic Ocean. At the center of a level plateau, it is approximately equal to the free air anomaly. Image courtesy of USGS. For example, the northeast-southwest trending high across central New Jersey represents a graben of Triassic age largely filled with dense basalts. No Derivative works - You may not alter, transform, or build upon this work. Examples include a magnitude 7.5 earthquake centered northwest of Puerto Rico in 1943, and magnitude 8.1 and 6.9 earthquakes north of Hispaniola in 1946 and 1953, respectively. [18] For example, typical Bouguer anomalies in the Central Alps are 150 milligals. Many tectonic models have been proposed to explain this geologically fascinating, tectonically active region; however, none has gained acceptance, and the region remains poorly understood, largely because its underwater location makes it difficult to study. For more information on past exploration of this region by the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploraiton and Research, visit this page. The value of this excess mass depends upon more arbitrary assumptions for the crustal mass in the Puerto Rico Trench and its landward wall, but if the other assumptions above are realistic, the dense mass is required and is adequate to bend the surface down at the trench. Subsequent cooling thickens the lithosphere again and subsidence takes place. The USGS has an ongoing program to identify and map the faults in this region using various geophysical and geological methods in order to estimate the location and magnitude of potential earthquakes. Office of Ocean Exploration and Research | National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration | Puerto Ricosrocky island crustand its surrounding seafloor are squeezedbetween the tectonic plates. By continuing to use our website, you are agreeing to our, American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research, Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Cooling of continental lithosphere by thermal conduction to the surface following a heating event imposes a load on the lithosphere and causes subsidence as the basement rocks contract. The rocks are naturally full of fractures and faults and given enough push, some of these faults may move abruptly to relieve the stress;causing earthquakes. Fifteen years later, Isaac Newton used his newly formulated universal theory of gravitation to explain the anomaly. In contrast, the Caribbean plate farther east overrides the North American plate, creating the island arc of the Lesser Antilles with its active volcanoes. This brings the free-air anomaly, which omits the correction terms for either, close to zero. The low-density sediments of the Molasse basin produce a negative anomaly. [16], Forward modelling is the process of computing the detailed shape of the compensation required by a theoretical model and using this to correct the Bouguer anomaly to yield an isostatic anomaly.[17]. The unusually deep sea floor is not limited to the trench, but also extends farther south toward Puerto Rico. [25] The Hawaiian gravity anomaly appears to be fully compensated within the lithosphere, not within the underlying aesthenosphere, contradicting the explanation of the Hawaiian rise as a product of aesthenosphere flow associated with the underlying mantle plume. Because the island lies on an active plate boundary, earthquakes are a constant threat, and the densely populated coastal areas are vulnerable to tsunamis (Uri ten Brink, 2003). Carl Bowin, 1972. If the Earth were an ideal oblate spheroid of uniform density, then the gravity measured at every point on its surface would be given precisely by a simple algebraic expression. There are no active volcanoes in Puerto Rico and virgin islands. This is tedious and time-consuming but necessary for obtaining a meaningful gravity anomaly. Share sensitive information only on official, secure websites. This comparison, though of limited application to other places, helps calibrate coastal geology for assessment of earthquake and tsunami potential along the Antilles Subduction Zone. Figure produced in Google Earth Pro. Finally, a thick limestone platform, which was originally deposited in flat layers near sea level, is now tilted northward at a uniform angle. Eyewitness reports of an 1867 Virgin Islands tsunami gave a maximum wave height of >7 m in Frederiksted, St. Croix, where a large naval vessel was left on top of a pier. It is postulated that differential shifts between the Caribbean plate and the underthrust Atlantic plate have occurred at least twice, once in late Eocene to early Oligocene, during which the outer island chain of the northern Lesser Antillean arc was formed, and again sometime since the late Miocene, when the Barbados ridge and associated uplifted topography were formed. The proposed shear zone or tear is inferred from seismic, morphological, and gravity observations to start at the trench at 64.5W and trend southwestwardly toward eastern Puerto Rico. Viscous fluid model estimates of crustal thickness and free-air anomaly compared with measured free- air anomalies and seismic depths of Puerto Rico trench and mid-Atlantic rise Document ID 19660037496 Document Type This will be the first Okeanos Explorer cruise to plan on conducting ROV operations 12 hours a day. The ridge and its flanks appear to be fully isostatically compensated. The residual gravity anomalies are then consistent with the existence of a subcrustal dense mass, that could be the hanging slab of lithosphere. Leg 3 will include telepresence capability for all ROV dives, permitting the public to watch the expedition live and in action over the Internet. However, present-day slope seafloor-morphology is complicated by shaping processes, which are not readily separable through pure bathymetric analysis. The complex dates in part from the Eocene, and elements of the arc system. Agreement NNX16AC86A, Journal of Geophysical Research (Solid Earth), Is ADS down? ago over a time period as short as 14-40 kyr. The isostatic anomaly includes correction terms for both effects, which reduces it nearly to zero as well. Earthquakes have been documented in the northeastern Caribbean since the arrival of Columbus to the Americas; written accounts of these felt earthquakes exist in various parts of the world. The Puerto Rico Trench is assumed to be caused by a downwards bending of the Atlantic lithosphere. The free-air minimum east of the Lesser Antilles is related to underthrusting of the Caribbean plate by the Atlantic Ocean plate. You do not have access to this content, please speak to your institutional administrator if you feel you should have access. [1] Typically the model is based on simplifying assumptions, such as that, under its self-gravitation and rotational motion, the planet assumes the figure of an ellipsoid of revolution. Secure .gov websites use HTTPS From February 24 through the end of April 2015, three NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer expeditions legs will involve traveling to areas identified as priority regions for exploration by multiple groups within the U.S. Geological Survey, the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service, the NOAA National Ocean Service, the Caribbean Fisheries Management Council, Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources, and other territory and federal partners. The gravitational attraction of the high terrain is balanced by the reduced gravitational attraction of its underlying low-density roots. I explain these vertical movements by a sudden increase in the slab's descent angle that caused the trench to subside and the island to rise. Website Satisfaction Survey This new type of lander will likely provide the first full-depth CTD measurements in the Puerto Rico Trench. Official websites use .gov Here the axis of the free-air minimum lies very close to the eastern border of a zone of epicenters which apparently marks the commencement of crustal faulting along the underthrust. Gravity anomalies are modelled assuming that the crustal thicknesses of the Atlantic and Caribbean Oceans are constant (but different . The unusually deep sea floor is not limited to the trench, but also extends farther south toward Puerto Rico. The crustal thickness and the free-air anomaly computed for sinkers of different sizes and depths are then compared with the measured freeair anomalies and seismic depths of the Puerto Rico trench and the mid-Atlantic rise. The difference between the corrected measured gravity and the normal gravity is the gravity anomaly.[6]. Trenches in the Pacific are located in places where one tectonic plate subducts or slides under another one. Erosion is a concern in many coastal areas, but is particularly serious to island economies that rely heavily on the tourist industry. The gravitational body force that acts on a flap of lithosphere, hanging in the aesthenosphere and more dense than it, pulls the lithosphere down at the trench. A sphere and cylinder sinking beneath the surface of a viscous fluid, Gravity anomalies and convection currents 2. Widespread damage in Puerto Rico and Hispaniola from an earthquake in 1787 was estimated to be the result of a magnitude 8 earthquake north of the islands. The geologic settings of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands have created or contributed to several pressing societal issues related to human safety, environmental health, and economic development. Gravity anomalies and the origin of the Puerto Rico Trench | Geophysical Journal International | Oxford Academic Abstract. The free-air anomaly is also close to zero except near boundaries of crustal blocks. Examples include a magnitude 7.5 earthquake centered northwest of Puerto Rico in 1943, and magnitude 8.1 and 6.9 earthquakes north of Hispaniola in 1946 and 1953, respectively. Many tectonic models have been proposed to explain this geologically fascinating, tectonically active region; however, none have gained acceptance, and the region remains poorly understood, largely because its underwater location makes it difficult to study. The normal gravity accounts for the bulk gravitation of the entire Earth, corrected for its idealized shape and rotation. The Bouger anomaly is very negative over elevated terrain. U.S. Geological Survey. If the Earth were an ideal oblate spheroid of uniform density, then the gravity measured at every point on its surface would be given precisely by a simple algebraic expression. The slumped material comprises carbonate blocks, which are cohesive and the edge of the carbonate platform is steeper than most continental slopes, resulting in a higher potential runup To help understand the origin of the unusual bathymetry, gravity, and vertical tectonics of the plate boundary and to provide constraints for hazard assessment, the morphology of the entire 770-km-long trench from the Dominican Republic in the west to Anguilla in the east was mapped with multibeam echosounder during three cruises in 2002 and 2003. The Puerto Rico Trench, in contrast, is located at a boundary between two plates that slide past each other with only a small component of subduction. We study the oblique convergence of the NOAM and CARIB plates between southeastern Cuba to northern Puerto Rico, A post-hurricane survey of a Caribbean island affords comparisons with geologic evidence for greater overwash at the same place. Secure .gov websites use HTTPS Parts of the Puerto Rico Trench were previously Understanding continental slope morphological evolution is essential for predicting depositional systems and reservoirs in the adjacent basin. Different theoretical models will include different corrections to the value of gravity, and so a gravity anomaly is always specified with reference to a particular model.
